In 2004, Iris Chang, author of the bestselling book "The Rape of Nanking," took her own life at age 36. Her groundbreaking work exposed one of history's most brutal massacres, where Japanese forces killed over 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers in Nanking during December 1937.

The atrocities committed in Nanking were unspeakable - systematic rape, torture, and murder that shocked even Nazi witnesses in the city. Chang's intensive research, which involved interviewing survivors and examining graphic documentation, may have contributed to her later depression.

The question remains: Why is humanity capable of such evil? The Bible indicates that human nature, combined with Satan's influence (John 8:44), can lead to horrific acts of violence and cruelty.

However, there is hope. The Bible prophesies that despite humanity reaching the brink of self-destruction (Matthew 24:22), Jesus Christ will return to end violence and establish peace. God's plan includes:

  • A 1,000-year period of prosperity under Christ's rule
  • The resurrection of all who died throughout history (Revelation 20:12)
  • An end to death, sorrow, and pain (Revelation 21:4-5)

This hope extends to everyone - including Iris Chang, the victims of the Nanking massacre, and all who have suffered throughout human history.
