Five Ways Teaching Older Women's Sunday School Changed My Faith Journey

When my pastors approached me about teaching women's Sunday school, I felt intimidated. The majority of women were 40 years older than me—and far more experienced in their faith walk. However, accepting this role became one of the most enriching experiences of my young adult life.

Here are five valuable lessons I've learned from teaching older women:

  1. We never stop learning from God's Word. These women, despite decades of Bible study, remain curious and eager to learn more. Their thought-provoking questions and insights have deepened my own love for Scripture and understanding of God.

  2. We can always serve, regardless of limitations. Despite physical limitations that come with age, these women find meaningful ways to serve—driving others to appointments, sending encouraging cards, making phone calls to shut-ins, and maintaining faithful prayer ministries. Their dedication inspires me to serve creatively in any circumstance.

  3. We grow in hope through perseverance. These women have witnessed wars, racism, illnesses, and loss. Yet their hope remains anchored in Christ. Their testimonies of perseverance through suffering strengthen my own faith and remind me of our eternal hope.

  4. We have a true family in Christ's body. When I moved from Tennessee to North Carolina, these women welcomed me as family. Despite our generational differences, Jesus unites us in meaningful fellowship that transcends age and background.

  5. We can be effective in God's kingdom at any age. The silver-crowned wisdom of these women reminds me of Psalm 71:17-18. Their faithful witness demonstrates how God uses His people throughout their entire lives to proclaim His truth to coming generations.

To develop similar enriching relationships:

  • Join multi-generational Bible study groups
  • Volunteer in senior adult ministries
  • Visit or call shut-in church members
  • Study Scripture together
  • Pray with and for each other
  • Share life experiences

While society changes, the gospel remains constant—powerfully uniting believers across generations. These relationships offer unique perspectives and wisdom that same-age friendships cannot provide.
