Another mass shooting in California claimed seven lives and wounded thirteen, raising questions about the source of such evil acts.

The perpetrator, 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, targeted sorority women in Santa Barbara, allegedly due to previous rejections. While public discourse often centers on gun control and mental health reform, these recurring tragic events prompt deeper questions about the origins of evil.

The Bible identifies Satan as the source of evil - an angelic being who rebelled against God and was cast down to Earth. As "the god of this age" (2 Corinthians 4:4) and "prince of the power of the air" (Ephesians 2:2), Satan has the ability to influence human minds by broadcasting negative thoughts and attitudes that appeal to our selfish desires.

However, humans aren't helpless against this influence. The Bible teaches that we can resist evil through:

  • Submission to God
  • Active resistance to negative influences
  • Following God's laws
  • Developing spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:16)

While we can't excuse evil actions by saying "the devil made me do it," understanding spiritual influence helps explain why some individuals commit horrific acts. The Bible promises a future time when evil's influence will end through Christ's return and Satan's removal, bringing peace and reconciliation to humanity.

For the families affected by this tragedy in California, we extend our deepest sympathies. These events remind us of the urgent need to resist hatred and vengeance in our own lives while working toward a more peaceful future.
