The hit Apple TV+ series "Severance" presents a disturbing vision of workplace dystopia that cleverly explores themes of hell, consciousness, and human nature. The show follows employees at Lumon Industries who undergo a procedure that splits their consciousness between work ("innies") and personal life ("outies"), with neither version aware of the other's existence.

Religious symbolism permeates the series. Lumon's founder, Kier Eagan, is worshipped like a deity, complete with sacred texts and catechetical training videos. The company's "nine core principles" mirror the biblical fruit of the spirit, while its merit-based system suggests works-based salvation.

The show's hellish themes are explicit from the first episode, titled "Good News About Hell." The severed floor requires descending via elevator, evoking an underworld. Characters like flame-haired Helly R. and references to mythological figures like Persephone reinforce the infernal atmosphere.

The core concept of severance itself represents a hellish state of divided consciousness. While modern workers might initially view strict work-life separation as paradise, the show reveals it as torment. This separation violates God's intended harmony between work and rest, creating an existence of either endless toil (for innies) or purposeless leisure (for outies).

"Severance" joins other popular media exploring afterlife concepts, reflecting persistent human interest in eternal questions. Recent Pew research shows 71% of Americans believe in heaven and 61% in hell, suggesting these themes resonate deeply with audiences despite our supposedly secular age.

The show ultimately portrays hell as a state of disintegration and isolation – the opposite of heaven's promised wholeness and community. Through its rich metaphors and compelling narrative, "Severance" offers a thought-provoking meditation on consciousness, free will, and the nature of eternal destiny.
