Understanding Jesus' Glory: What Philippians 2:7 Reveals About Divine Humility

In Philippians 2:7, Jesus "made himself nothing" or "emptied himself" by setting aside his divine glory to become human. This profound act of humility is known as the kenosis - where Christ voluntarily limited the use of his divine attributes during his earthly ministry.

While Jesus remained fully God, he chose to set aside certain aspects of his divine glory:

  • He gave up his heavenly position and privileges
  • He accepted human limitations and weaknesses
  • He submitted himself to the Father's will
  • He took on the role of a servant
  • He experienced human suffering and death

This self-emptying did not diminish Christ's divine nature. Rather, it demonstrated his incredible love and humility in choosing to identify with humanity. Though he possessed all divine attributes, Jesus limited their independent exercise during his earthly life.

The purpose was to:

  • Fulfill God's redemptive plan
  • Provide an example of true humility
  • Enable him to be our perfect high priest
  • Show the depth of God's love for humanity

After his death and resurrection, Jesus resumed his full divine glory and authority at the Father's right hand. His temporary setting aside of glory makes his sacrifice even more meaningful - the eternal Son of God chose to become like us to save us.

This doctrine reminds us that true greatness comes through humble service. Just as Christ set aside his rights and privileges for our sake, we are called to have the same mindset in how we relate to others.
