The coronavirus outbreak has sparked global concern, representing one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse - the pale horse of pestilence and disease epidemics (Revelation 6:8).

As of May 13, 2020, the virus has caused 295,323 confirmed deaths and over 4.3 million infections across 213 countries. Modern air travel has enabled rapid global spread within hours.

The virus likely originated from a Wuhan, China "wet market," initially transferring from bats to snakes and then to humans through consumption of infected meat. Research published in the Journal of Medical Virology suggests snakes sold at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market were the probable source.

Biblical dietary laws actually prohibited eating both bats and snakes (Leviticus 11), classifying them as unclean meats. Following these ancient food restrictions could have prevented this outbreak. Similarly, other biblical laws around sanitation, quarantine, and moral behavior were designed to prevent disease spread:

  • Proper waste burial (Deuteronomy 23:12-13)
  • Isolation of infected individuals (Leviticus 15)
  • Sexual purity to prevent STIs (Exodus 20:14)
  • Sanitation of contaminated items

While this pandemic may eventually be controlled, Bible prophecy indicates more severe disease epidemics will come. However, Jesus Christ's return will end the ride of the pale horse. When humanity repents and follows God's beneficial laws, including dietary restrictions, disease outbreaks will cease.
