Lead Your Church in Reading the Bible Together in 2020

Bible reading enables genuine spiritual growth and deeper understanding of Christ. As pastors, we're called to feed our congregations the Word, as faith grows through hearing and meditating on Scripture (Rom. 10:17; John 17:20). While some church members maintain consistent Bible reading habits, many would benefit from structured guidance.

Robert Murray M'Cheyne, a Scottish Presbyterian pastor, created a helpful Bible reading calendar in 1842. His plan guides readers through the entire Bible in one year, covering the Psalms and New Testament twice. Though M'Cheyne died at 29, his thoughtful approach to congregational Bible reading continues to impact churches today.

Benefits of Following M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Plan:

  • Creates unity through shared reading experiences
  • Enables pastors to guide congregation's spiritual growth
  • Strengthens communal bonds through common scripture engagement
  • Facilitates shared prayer and discussion
  • Restores corporate nature to individual Bible reading

Pastors can implement this plan by:

  • Leading by personal example
  • Encouraging congregation-wide participation
  • Acknowledging potential challenges while emphasizing benefits
  • Providing regular support and accountability

While Bible reading plans aren't explicitly commanded in Scripture, they represent practical wisdom for spiritual growth. M'Cheyne noted that shared reading helps Christians "pray over the same promises, mourn over the same confessions, praise God in the same songs, and be nourished by the same words of eternal life."
